Reto Marti Sculpture & Masonry

Born in 1960 in Switzerland I was raised educated and trained in the German speaking part of the country. In 1981 I entered into skill training with Fischer Naturstein to learn the trade of a stone carver. Over a period of seven years I apprenticed on numerous projects including: outdoor sculpture, architectural carving for heritage buildings, letter carving, installing stone products for the construction marked and the fabrication of outdoor fountains.

I developed conceptual as well as technical skills during that time. Access to contemporary and classical literature pertaining to art provided me with further knowledge. Submissions for artist calls and the participation in art competitions were the venues in which I explored art. Ranking 3rd with my team members in the 1988 Snow Sculpting World Championship in Savonlinna, Finland presents the most notable event I participated in outside the apprenticeship program.

I immigrated to Canada in 1988 where I continue to sculpt. Over these past years I have executed and produced the following body of work.

  • Summer of 92 private commission for abstract carving in Whistler B.C.
  • Fall of 92 Abstract carving for same patron
  • Spring and summer of 93/94 clay studies, studio work.
  • Winter of 95 Yellow Knife N.W.T. Contracted to instruct granite carving on life-size figurative sculpture
  • Spring and Summer of 96 continue contract in Yellow Knife
  • 97/98 studio work Vancouver B.C.
  • Fall of 99 commemorative installation in stone for the Municipality of Whistler
  • Winter 99/2000 commissioned by Merit Consultants of Bellevue Washington, USA. to carve a six foot tall abstract granite sculpture.
  • Summer of 2000, selected to participate in the Portals Of The Future symposium in Richmond B.C.
  • Fall of 2000 on going contract to teach stone carving through the Vancouver School Board.
